The Gravely Hall Performing Arts Center was happy to host Bravo Kids! Musical theater camp from May 24 to 29. This arts education collaboration has been around for five years, but given the challenges posed by the pandemic since March 2020, it was special to have this in-person arts education opportunity again.
This year’s camp, which included students from third grade through graduating, focused on singing and dancing. Students worked on solos and group pieces under the able guidance of choreographer/director and DHS alumnus Evelyn Lackney and vocal music director Frieda Gebert.
Students explored a variety of themes including friendship, dream fulfillment, life satisfaction and commitment to a cause. The students found fun and friendship in the daily rehearsal routines and were excited to explore dance and music.
During the week, we continued to observe COVID protocols, including masking in the school and teaching in small groups. Saturday May 29 the end of camp was celebrated with two performances for family and friends.
“Our community partnerships are at the heart of our arts education work,” said Jane Dewey, director of arts education for the Danville Independent Schools District and “Bravo Kids! founder and director, Jean Crawford Griffin who believes in the importance of making the arts accessible to all students.
Danville Independent Schools and Gravely Hall Performing Arts Center will announce next year’s visual and performing arts education programming at the start of the 2021-2022 school year.
