Full Black Friday Weekend 2021 Shopper Traffic Recap Shows Increased In-Store Foot Traffic From 2020 According To Johnson Controls’ Sensormatic Solutions | Business and finance

Sensormatic Solutions, Johnson Controls’ leading global retail solutions portfolio, today released a comprehensive rundown of buyer traffic in the United States during the Black Friday 2021 Extended Weekend, Black Friday, 26 November, through Sunday November 28, 2021. These results are informed by analyzing retail traffic data within the company’s intelligent operating platform, Sensormatic IQ.
Sensormatic Solutions found that in-store traffic for Black Friday weekend 2021 was down -21.7% from 2019, the last year before the pandemic. In-store traffic on Saturday November 27 was down -17.6% and traffic on Sunday November 28 was down -8.1% from two years ago. Compared to 2020, Black Friday weekend shoppers’ traffic increased 34.2%.
“Just as 2020 has been a year like no other, 2021 also brings unique opportunities and challenges for retailers as we officially kick off the holiday season. Shoppers are returning to stores, but health and safety concerns persist, making some wary of traditionally crowded shopping days, ”said Brian Field, senior director of the global retail council, Sensormatic Solutions. “With a data-driven understanding of customer concerns, retailers can implement processes to help shoppers feel comfortable in stores – via occupancy monitoring, temperature controls, extended hours and a seamless contactless shopping experience. “
Sensormatic Solutions also looked at the effect of Cyber Monday on retail brick and mortar traffic on Monday, November 29, and found that foot traffic this year was down -9.9% from 2019. Cyber Monday traffic levels were similar to typical fall 2021 numbers. In the week leading up to Thanksgiving and Black Friday weekend, in-store traffic was down -11.4% from 2019.
“While the mix of weekday shopping has been on the rise throughout the pandemic, with shoppers taking advantage of more flexible working hours and trying to avoid the crowds on weekends, Cyber Monday n t generally has no impact on store traffic and the same is true for this year. Said Field. “Over the past month, in-store traffic has gradually improved as consumers started their holiday shopping early. Retailers are seeing positive changes year over year, and Black Friday weekend data shows an upward trajectory towards pre-pandemic levels. “
Sensormatic Solutions also analyzed traffic on Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday. After all the data is counted, the results show that store traffic on Thanksgiving Day was down -90.4% from 2019, as most retailers closed their stores for the holidays, and store traffic Black Friday decreased by -28.3% compared to 2019.
