Britney Coleman of AVENUE QUEER at the Ted Mann Concert Hall
Returning to the Ted Mann Concert Hall for the first time since 2019, acclaimed stage actress, Britney Colemancurrently performing in the Sondheim’s Company revival with Patti LuPone, is taking a break from her Broadway run to join TCGMC for our Pride Concert!
This concert will feature repertoire from the vast songbooks of some of the most famous musicals of all time, woven together for a presentation you won’t want to miss!
We chat with Britney about musical theater and singing with the Twin Cities Gay Men’s Chorus!
How does it feel to find the audience and theaters live?
It was amazing! The audience seemed just as excited to be in the theater as the performers were when we picked up the pace. A huge “well done!” to venues that have been able to leverage their resources with their communities and open outdoor venues for performances over the past two years. A second “BRAVO!” to the places that worked so hard to enforce masks and proof of vaccinations to keep everyone safe when we started playing indoors. It made the process of getting back on stage safe and really exciting!
What inspired you to pursue a career in show business?
I was influenced from an early age by my family, as well as my third-grade music teacher, who thought it would be a great idea to host small versions of Broadway shows at our fall concerts. and spring. I was cast as Mary in The Secret Garden and have been hooked ever since.
What were your musical influences?
Who ARE NOT my musical influences? A college music teacher introduced me to the music of Audra McDonald and it opened up a world of possibilities for me. She was the first woman I’ve seen who looked like me and sang like me on Broadway, and I knew I’d be able to get on stage and sing the way I wanted to sing, not the way people always assumed I was. was singing.
What’s your favorite role or production you’ve been in?
I’ve been lucky enough to play Guinevere in a particular adaptation of Camelot several times over the past few years. This score is so dreamy!
What is your favorite musical?
A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder
What is your favorite musical song?
Hadestown Flowers
What’s your favorite musical song to sing?
Anything Sondheim!
What other role do you hope to play?
One that has yet to be written.
What’s it like to sing with the Twin City Gay Men’s Chorus for their Pride concert?
What a thrill! So excited to meet everyone and make glorious music.
What do you hope the audience will take away from the Pride concert?
I’d like our audience to laugh a little, cry a little, and enjoy the rare collective experience of being human without judgment. I’d like them to see and remember that it doesn’t take much to help someone – you might even make a friend in the process!
Do you have a favorite place in Minneapolis or a place you hope to visit during your stay?
I was here on tour with Beautiful in 2015 so can’t wait to see The Orpheum again.
Thanks for your time Britney!
