Here are the top stories in Austin today:

1) City Council adopts the first of two rate increases proposed by Austin Energy. City Council on Thursday voted 7-4 in favor of an Austin Energy proposal that will raise the average monthly residential electric bill by about $15 to offset high natural gas prices and rising charges on the ERCOT energy market. Go to Austin American-Statesman to learn more.

4) ERCOT’s CEO aims to restore public confidence in the Texas power grid. The ERCOT’s new CEO, Pablo Vegas, made his first public appearance Thursday with PUC President Peter Lake. During the press conference, Lake said, “Our network will be ready for, is ready for whatever Mother Nature throws at us.” The next step for Vegas is how ERCOT will handle a new generator set market. Head to FOX 7 Austin to learn more about what ERCOT is doing to prepare for winter.
